VFW Post 9599 has always stepped up with financial help for local groups, using proceeds from its Bingo games and Friday night all-you-can-eat fish and chicken suppers for donations to the Relay for Life, the Jefferson park and recreation department, Boy Scouts, the high school yearbook and more. The post also donates to veterans’ projects and the VA hospital.
Now, post commander Don Ihnken says, it’s time for the community to reciprocate.
The post has had to suspend those projects while it deals with a black mold problem in the building at 109 N. Chestnut. Members are working to raise $15,000 to cover the cost of replacing carpet and floor tile, painting, and replacing the kitchen appliances and fixtures. So far, $5,500 has been raised.
“It’s tough since we can’t do the things we’ve always done to raise money. We just can’t have the public in our building right now,” Ihnken said.
There are some pending local grant applications, but members are inviting area residents to donate to the cause. All donations will be gratefully accepted. Persons can send donations to VFW Post 9599, 109 N. Chestnut St, Jefferson, IA 50129.
